Job Description

Johns Manville is currently looking to hire an Intellectual Property Scientist, located in Littleton, CO. The Intellectual Property Scientist’s role includes timely monitoring and communicating of internal/external intellectual property activities and working proactively and collaboratively with all business units and functional teams to help strengthen and manage JM’s Intellectual Property. The goal is to drive IP engagement across all levels of the company to maximize the value of JM's Intellectual property investment. The position will also actively engage in idea collection across the company.

Your Day-to-Day:

  • Work proactively and collaboratively with business unit and functional unit team members to help create, strengthen, and develop JM's intellectual property.
  • Work with the businesses and functions to establish consistent operating rhythms regarding intellectual property awareness, development, and management.
  • Proactively monitor and communicate competitive patent activities, provide updates and recommendations, and drive actions. Develop tracking and alerts for competitive case examination processes and changes in IP legal status.
  • Develop training programs to JM technical community to improve IP knowledge and simple IP searching and tracking processes.
  • Assist JM technical teams and individual inventors with the preparation of invention disclosures, performing prior art searching, and pursuing patent applications, or other forms of intellectual property protection.
  • Perform prior art searches to assess patentability and clearance issues, internal and competitive patent landscape to support business unit technical projects.
  • Support R&D and business unit technical strategy development by performing technical and IP landscape analysis and providing recommendations.
  • Assist in the evaluation of concepts from external sources.
  • Provide research and support to patent attorneys on patent prosecution matters, licensing, and acquisitions.
  • Identify active JM patents that are no longer important to the business and make recommendations concerning possible licensing, divesture, or abandonment.
  • Work in conjunction with IP Legal department to provide regular intellectual property updates to R&D and JM Businesses on current patent docket status and expenditures.
  • Work across JM to develop and implement idea capture and management processes to collect valuable ideas to drive success in all aspects of JM's businesses.
  • Provide training and administrative functions on external IP searching and innovation software platforms.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Polymer Science, Engineering, or other related technical degree with a minimum of 5 years of related work experience, 10 years preferred.
  • Capable of conducting and analyzing literature & patent searches and preparing invention disclosures
  • Ability to teach, coach and mentor others in conducting effective competitive IP evaluations
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Experience of idea collection and management systems preferred
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization, both internally and externally
  • Ability to envision and communicate how competitive IP activity, literature and new competitive products relate to JM today and in the future.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Travel required (When required , typically less than 30 days per year)
  • Work environment is typical of a research and development facility (may be exposed to environmental conditions of cold, heat, high noise levels, moving mechanical parts, heights, dust/mist/gas/fumes, extensive walking or climbing, etc.)
